When Sam is in his crib at night, as far as he knows he’s by himself. If he wakes up in the dark with a leaky diaper he feels alone, frightened, and uncomfortable. In his little baby mind he doesn’t know for sure that things won’t always be that way. He cries out and, magically, Mama and Daddy appear. They set things right, give him kisses and he’s able to sleep again. What he doesn’t fully grasp is that we are always in the next room, hearing his rustles and squeaks on the baby monitor, always conscious of his presence and always loving him. God is even closer to us than that.
